Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy (OT) is an evidence-based intervention that focuses on helping people of all ages participate in meaningful activities, or occupations, that they want or need to do in their everyday lives. These activities can include anything from dressing and eating to driving and working. Occupational Therapists work with individuals of all ages facing disorders, injuries, pain, or illnesses that hinder their ability to perform a range of physical tasks like mobility, engaging in activities, self-care, academic or work-related responsibilities, and household chores independently.
Skills most commonly addressed in Occupational Therapy are:
- Sensory processing and regulation
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) like dressing, bathing, grooming, feeding, doing age-appropriate chores, etc.
- Fine motor skills, strengthening and coordination
- Functional mobility like walking, crawling, and balance
- Body and safety awareness
- Emotional regulation
- Attention and concentration
- Gross motor skills, planning, and strengthening
- Cognitive functioning
- Visual perceptual skills and processing
- Handwriting
- Social skills, conduct, and communication
Occupational Therapists use a holistic approach to assess the person’s strengths and limitations, as well as environmental factors, to develop personalized treatment plans aimed at improving functional abilities and promoting independence.
OT interventions may include:
- Intervention techniques and exercises to improve strength, coordination, and range of motion.
- Sensory integration to address sensory processing issues.
- Adaptive techniques and strategies to increase independence in daily tasks as well as social and emotional challenges.
- Activities to enhance memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities.
- Environmental modifications to improve safety and accessibility.
